Types of Watches
Watches have been our part of life for centuries, and there is no doubt that it has evolved a lot in terms of style, design, and formats over time. People of the new era do not only use it as a time machine but think of it as a lifestyle. Every man should know all types of watches.
Moreover, Watches reflects people’s personality. It translates the wearer’s taste, wealth, and, most importantly, humor. The majority of people do not feel to know the types of wristwatches. I was also one of them, never mind. There are different types of watch brands. It’s about Fashion, it comes up with two main-factors comforts and style.
Classification of Watches
Before moving to types of watches, you must know that there are three categories of watches.
1. Mechanical Movement watches
These are made by skilled professionals and are expensive. Mechanical movement time machines are either made by my hands or plugged periodically by the self-winding mechanism. Batteries do not power these watches; instead, they get fuel from the earth through the gravitational pull, solar energy, and kinetic energy generated by springs and gears.
Like different types of Rolex watches, Patek Phillippe, Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constantin, most luxurious watch companies use this magnificent art style. If you hear a watch ticking, then it is a mechanical watch for sure because that noise is only produced in watches by the action of spring that fuels it as it unwinds. However, always remember that a skilled artisan should clean it; otherwise, there is a possibility that it won’t work again as it requires a high quality of expertise.
2. Quartz Movement Watches
A simple, straightforward aim, watchmakers used a piece of quartz crystal in watches so that laypeople could afford those watches. It was first invented by Seiko Japanese watchmakers who challenged the traditional approach of the mechanical watches era; by the time in response to it, every other company started to make their Quartz watches.
These watches are powered by batteries and are designed so perfectly that it shows an accurate time. Its battery functions by sending a signal through crystal quartz. It vibrates 32768 times per second to produce the required frequency needed to operate the circuits. Which makes the time machine move. This invention just changed the whole structure of the watch market.
The benefit of this kind of watch is it is more durable than mechanical watches as its parts are readily available and require fewer repairing parts. They are cheaper than mechanical watches. They demand less maintenance cost as an ordinary watchmaker can repair it.
3. Automatic Movement Watches
It is a modified version of mechanical watches and is also referred to as a self-winding watch Mechanism. No manual winding is required in this kind of watch; it automatically winds by converting kinetic energy from the wearer’s natural wrist movement. These are the types of watches every man should own. Automatic movement watches are usually thicker than Mechanical watches due to the metal rotor plugged into the manual parts.
It is arguably one of the most sold watches today. Getting into the history, this type of watch is from the early 1800s made under the order of King Louis XV11 of France because he enjoyed watching Horse races. He wanted a watch that could measure the accurate time of how much time horses did elapse by sitting at a distance. Louis Moinet, also known as the Father of high frequencies, made the first chronograph watch in 1816.
Royal Watcher maker Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec commercially marketed it in 1821 on request of the King. Watch Historians believed Rieussec, the inventor of Chronograph, watched until 2013 when they discovered chronograph watch in Louis Moinet pocket. In 1915 Gaston Breitling made the first chronograph watch with central second hand and with 30 minute counter.
Later again, in 1923, he managed to make a chronograph watch with a separate pusher at 2’oclock. In 1934 Willy Breitling updated the version with a second pusher at 4’oclock. Since then, till today whole industry has stopped this version of the chronograph watch.
Chronograph watches have two essential combined functions firstly it tells time; secondly, they can be used as a stopwatch. The stopwatch button is mainly situated on the top right at 2’oclock on the watch. However, some chronograph watches can get complicated because of having additional multiple sub dials to measure seconds, minutes, hours, and even tenth of a second.
The one-push button on the right bottom at 4’oclock reset the timer back to zero. One more thing to remember is that some stopwatches do not pause anywhere to get readings; instead, pushing a button at 4’oclock will fly the needle back to zero.
Different Flavors of Chronograph Watches
1. In-house Chronograph Watches
You can say these watches are designed in a unified form, and the column wheel has the central command. Moreover, this type of chronograph watch offers a slight movement as it requires careful adjustment by a skilled repairer, which leads to a unique feel of quality.
In-house movement chronograph watches require investment as they are expensive. Their parts are not available easily due to which its repair would also require a significant amount of your time and money.
2. Third-party Chronograph Watches
These kinds of chronograph watches are inexpensive and called chronograph watches’ actual design. It does not require any expertise; a simple watchmaker can fix it, and its parts are readily available. Moreover, calling this watch more reliable and accurate would not be wrong as machines do not need hard human work.
3. Flyback Chronograph Watches
This kind of watch has a timing hand that can quickly reset, flying back to zero. This feature allows the wearer to read and quickly get ready for the next measurement. It does not need to go round and finish the whole circle like an ordinary chronograph watch.
It is also known as Double Chronograph because of having a multiple-second hands feature. These features allow the wearer to stop and start the multiple second dialers independently. Moreover, when they are not in use, they hide behind the upper dialer to look like one and travel together.
5. Modern-day Chronograph Watches
There are two kinds: Automatic chronograph watches and another one is Digital chronograph watches. Automatic converts solely kinetic energy from wearers’ hand movement as a power source. On the other hand, digital is similar to simple stopwatches, which get their power from batteries.
Chronograph watches are not only for time racing; they can track many other things as well, including runs, walks, physical activity, bike rides, meetings, and several other planned stuff. You can put a stopwatch whenever your driver tells you that your car will be ready in five minutes, or you may place a reminder that your flight is about to take off in 20.
These watches are great for those who want to track their billable hours now and then. These watches cannot run hours long and are not operational underwater, yet they are worth your money and space in your watch box.
6. Diving Watches
It is also commonly known as divers or digital divers watch, mainly designed for underwater diving, which is more than 1.0 MPa (10 atm) water-resistant. The average water-resistance watch can work adequately from 600 to 980 ft. However, modern technology is so advanced nowadays that it allows the watch to go even deeper and function properly. Water-resistance watches are not new; this technology was first introduced in the 17 century but was not widespread until the early 19 century.
However, in the 19-century era, they modified the watch by two water and dust-resistant terms. Perhaps that was only made on customs for particular customers and was described as “Explorers watches.” This watch needs maintenance every two to five years.
These watches are not expensive nowadays, almost every watch has this feature, but the diving watches attested by ISO are expensive and reliable. This type of watch is best for swimmers, scuba divers, and people who have a watery work environment.
7. Pilot Watches
This type of watch is designed according to aviation or, in simple words, aircraft pilots. Initially, these were solely made for fighter pilots because they contained cool features like a tachymeter, altimeter, compasses, and other tools, which helped them make calculations during fly.
These watches have large watch face so that wearer could easily see the numbers. These are essential watches for pilots. These watches are expensive, but their value can only be judged on the number of aviation features a particular watch offers. More features more expensive, the watch is hence leading to high maintenance cost.
8. Field Watches
These watches are made for implementers, meaning for the executive branch of government. These watches can survive the worst and still gives an accurate time. These are dust-resistant, water-resistant, mud-resistant, and heat-resistant. Field watches are also called tool watches. These are made for institutions like law and order agencies as well as for military officials.
9. Solar Powered Watches
These kinds of watches capture solar energy through Photovoltaic cells installed on the watch face. Photovoltaic cells then convert the solar energy into electricity and are then stored in the power cell. It works the same as quartz watches. Moreover, solar-powered watches gain their power from the sun and all other types of bright lights.
These types of watches have evergreen battery life and have a reserve of up to six months. Most importantly, if it ever gets drain, put it under a bright light for a couple of hours; it will start again. However, companies like Seiko and Citizen automatic watches are best-selling companies on solar-powered watches because of their eco-friendly campaigns.
10. Smart Watches
Calling these types of watches a mini smartphone on your wrist would not be wrong. Smartwatches have features that allow you to control your mobile phone or other gadgets when connected to it without reaching your connected device. These are called smartwatches because of having a variety of features, but all smartwatches are not similar.
Some smartwatches are water-resistant, some provide camera facilities as well. Some smartwatches can even tell your heartbeat and could be used to track your walking time or sleeping time. There are also some apps for smartwatches. Standard smartwatches connected to your smartphone, give you notifications and access your emails, calendars, and even some of the apps according to their functional capacity.
Adding one more thing here, they contain Lithium-ion batteries which are rechargeable on electricity. Some smartwatch does offer all of the features, but some provide you with a particular function. There are also smartwatches with speakers. However, that is up to you which one is offering your needs entirely and is according to your affordability.
11. Tactile Watches
This watch tells you time without looking at it. It was made for blind people, and the first of this kind was made in the 1800s. The first tactile watch was made to know the time without pulling his watch from his pocket. There is various kind of tactile watches. The most commonly used t tactile watches have two ball bearings, which rotates around the watch and tells the time.

These are usually slim enough to be hidden undershirt or suit sleeves. Dress watches are made for formal gatherings or formal people. These watches are called the most elegant watches. They do not have any complications because their simple purpose is to tell time. The more it is simple, the more elegant it would look on the wearer’s attire. These are the best men’s dress watches.
A piece of advice here, people don’t give a lot of attention to it, but matching your watch with your belt and shoes would make your personality look even classier and sober. This type of watch has two hands, one for an hour and one hand for minutes, with a leather strap.
13. Digital Watches
These watches offer hours and minutes in digit form. They don’t contain a hands-on dial. In simple words, the watch shows numeric numbers rather than having a pointer or a big dial with complications. There are also beautiful digital watches for women and digital waterproof watches. There are few more types of digital watches which tell you moons movement; some tell you the time of different countries so on and so forth.
I hope you know about types of watches; it is not as simple as it seems. Every watch has its language, and every watch has something to offer you. There are different types of watches for men. It would help if you saw which one is best for you and, most importantly, according to your working environment. Just spending money and wearing a watch as a status symbol and not knowing its use is, then you don’t have a life. I would say about watches because they are not only time telling machine but no doubt a lifestyle……….!!
Watches are also made according to our daily use; they have their language that’s up to you, which corresponds with your style, comfort, and body language. However, buying a watch is difficult today compared to the golden ages because of new multi-functional modifications done according to our era of style. But nothing is to be worried about.
A piece of advice to my audience here while buying a watch do give your attention to the following facts. Firstly buying beautiful watches might not be a wise decision if it does not match your working environment. Like a businessman, you need a different watch style; you won’t be buying a watch made for a pilot or a scuba diving coach. Secondly, go to different stores before buying one as you might get one at a lower price. Thirdly be well aware of what features do that particular watch offers you. Fourthly buy with your open eyes whether that watch is original or a fake one.
